Saturday Excursions

Participants have the choice between two day trips that will take place simultaneously.

Melk

Wachau

Melk Abbey – Boat Trip on the Danube – Dürnstein

A full-day excursion to experience the beauty of the Wachau.

The Wachau is a stretch of the Danube Valley, between Melk and Krems, a landscape with a high aesthetic appeal. It preserves in an intact and visible form many traces - of an architectural nature (monasteries, castles, ruins), of urban design (towns and villages) and agricultural use (principally for the cultivation of vines) - of its evolution since prehistoric times.

Traversing this romantic scenery, full of history and legends, the Danube winds its way past charming old villages and steep vineyards.

Our first stop is Melk, where we will the visit the magnificent Benedictine Abbey, a pearl of the Austrian Baroque and a protected UNESCO World heritage site. The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey. A monastic school, the Stiftsgymnasium Melk, was founded in the twelfth century and the monastic library soon became renowned for its extensive manuscript collection.

We will continue the excursion by boat from Melk to Dürnstein and lunch will be served on board. The ruins of the old  castles reveal the former importance of this trade and trafficway. One such castle, "Dürnstein," is especially famous, because King Richard Lionheart was imprisoned there while waiting for his ransom to arrive from England, raised by his faithful minstrel Blondel

After a stroll through the romantic alleys of Dürnstein, we will return to Vienna by coach.

Carnuntum

Schlosshof

Carnuntum – Castle Schlosshof

Join us on this full-day excursion to the Roman city of Carnuntum and the Schloss Hof Estate.

From the 1st to the 4th century CE, Carnuntum was a important Roman metropolis on the border of the Roman Empire. Having around 50,000 inhabitants, Carnuntum became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior because of its military location, which was vital for securing the border, and because of its proximity to key trade routes.

Antiquity comes alive again in the Roman city quarter, with its reconstructed ancient buildings, and in the amphitheaters and Museum Carnuntinum, the city’s treasure chamber.

After extensive restoration and a redesigning of its contents, the Carnuntinum Museum presents a brand-new exhibition. The history of the city and its social life are impressively portrayed through (in part new) exhibits from the collections of the Province of Lower Austria, based on more than 130 years of research history in Carnuntum

Just a few minutes away, in the eastern part of Lower Austria, is the Baroque ensemble of the Schloss Hof Estate, which extends over an area of more than fifty hectares.

Once an imperial country seat, it was one of the most magnificent and stately rural homes in the Habsburg Empire. The palace was built in 1726 for the legendary general Prince Eugene of Savoy and subsequently remodeled and extended under Empress Maria Theresa to become the largest rural palace complex in Austria.

A stately residence, elaborate terraced gardens and a tranquil estate farm form an ensemble that uniquely combines imperial magnificence with rural idyll. Even in Prince Eugene’s time, the Schloss Hof Estate was famed far and wide for its glittering festivities.
